Book: Catching Ally Kat
Favorite quote:
“Ah,
that singer's pretty bad, ain't she? Whatever happened to that
pretty, little chick with the dark, brown hair and legendary golden
eyes? Now she had a voice!”
Story
behind the character: Rex was the man who raised Alameda Bryce,
though he isn't her father. He was a cowboy (though for some reason
he lost his accent right before he died...). When Rex went to protect
Blake, he was killed by a spell-caster. The first death in Catching
Ally Kat.
Charity:
I thought you were dead.
Rex:
I am.
Charity:
Then how could you possibly be here now?
Rex:
Because I wasn't dead before I died.
Charity:
What's that supposed to mean?
Rex:
For a writer, you sure don't know much.
Charity:
I write my characters to be smarter than me. That way people think
I'm smart too. So tell me, how are you here?
Rex:
A story can be read over and over. At the times read before my death,
I am still alive.
Charity:
Ah, I think I'm beginning to see. It's as if you are dead and yet
alive at the same time.
Rex:
That's right. As long as I stay within the guidelines of the story
before my death, I can still live.
Charity:
I see. So tell me, how come you lost your accent right before you
died?
Rex:
I thought it was because you completely forgot I had an accent....
Charity:
Shh! You weren't supposed to tell everyone that! Give them the story
reason.
Rex:
Oh. It was because I never actually had an accent. I just wanted to
mess around with Blake. And it seemed cool at the time.
Charity:
Oh. Couldn't you have come up with a better reason?
Rex:
Hey, come on! You're the writer, not me! Make up your own reason!
Charity:
I just did!
Rex:
So you're calling yourself dumb then?
Charity:
….
Rex:
I thought so. Well, I'm going now. Goodbye.
Charity:
I can't believe it. I was just outsmarted by my own character. (face
lights up) Maybe they're finally figuring out how to live on their
own!
