Book: The End of Chess
Favorite quote: “I think that's
enough people, don't you think?”
Story behind the character: Miss Randal
is a sort of guardian for Lilly. She cares for her while she hides
from the orphanage and gets Jonathan and the others out of a tight
spot.
Charity: Miss Randal, I have a
question.
Miss Randal: Yes?
Charity: When you were helping Jonathan
and Kyle and the manager get out of the shed, you called up all these
friends. Where did all these friends come from and why were they all
so willing to help you? Actually, why did you call so many in the
first place?
Miss Randal: That? Oh, that's easy.
College. I went to a rather small college and all of us had the exact
same classes all four years, which, wasn't exactly a common thing. So
we all got really close and hung out all the time. We were all like a
family. Most of them are all related already anyways, so that helped
too. But that's why I had to call all of them, because to call one
you have to call the rest.
Charity: They all still live around
here? None of them got married or moved away?
Miss Randal: Well, of course not, you
didn't write-
Charity: Yeah, yeah, I didn't write
their futures. I've heard that before. But if I had, what do you
suppose would have kept them from marrying or moving away?
Miss Randal: Isn't it obvious? At the
time you were writing this, you always said you were never getting
married. I'm sure that stuck with them. As for not moving away, you
yourself are more inclined to stay close to home, and so are they.
See?
Charity: I'd say those would be fair
reasons.
Miss Randal: Naturally, those kids
wouldn't come to me if I weren't reasonable. Speaking of which, may I
go now? I'd like to get back to reading the Wizard of Oz.
Charity: You aren't done reading it
yet?!
Miss Randal: You never said that I did
in your story!
Charity: I shouldn't have to! Geez,
can't you people live your own lives for once?
