Name: Emily Dillis (grandmother)
Book: The End of Chess
Favorite quote: “Yeah! I never thought about that! Thanks
grandma! You're the best!”
Story behind the character: Emily Dillis is the mother of
Jonathan's father. She comes for a visit amidst the craziness of
Jonathan's chess pieces, so she gets to play a part in helping
Jonathan figure out what's going on.
Charity: Mrs. Dillis-
Emily: Just call me Emily, dear.
Charity: Oh, okay. Emily, I have a question... why did you suggest
the secret passageway? You knew there wasn't one!
Emily: (laughs) Well, well, my dear. How was I to know there
weren't any? There very well could have been.
Charity: But you knew it wasn't likely. Why get his hopes up like
that?
Emily: Can't an old lady have some fun every once in a while?
Besides, how else were those people all getting into the house?
Charity: We don't know. It was never explained. And that's another
thing, you and Jonathan's mother were very relaxed about this whole
ordeal. Weren't you worried that someone was getting into the house?
Emily: Dear, I was written by a twelve year old girl. She didn't
realize that in real life, grownups are utterly boring.
Charity: I suppose you're right....
Emily: Besides, how else was the book supposed to progress if I
didn't suggest it?
Charity: True. At that point I was stuck trying to figure out how
to get to the part where everyone escapes from the orphanage.
Emily: Of course, dear. And it made for a very interesting story.
Now if you don't mind, I think I'll go read the Chronicles of Narnia
again.
Charity: Alright. Good day, Emily.
I don't know where you get the idea that grownups are utterly boring.
